During her Day on the Pittsburgh District, Bishop Moore-Koikoi updated attendees at the evening session held at Sewickley UMC. The Camping Initiative has set a 5-year goal of raising $5,000,000 for Western Pennsylvania camps, retreats, The Healthy Village Learning Institute, and At the Lake Ministries. All are working through programming, staff development, and use of their facilities to address the Five Areas of Focus: Developing principled Christian leaders; promoting abundant health, dismantling racism; creating new places for new people and renewing congregations, and engaging in ministry with the poor. WPAUMC clergy have been asked to make a financial pledge to the Camping Initiative by Annual Conference in June. Additionally, some congregations have launched pilot campaigns; a conference-wide campaign will kick off in the fall. Already, some corporate donations have been pledged or received for this initiative. A portion of the campaign will provide greater campership opportunities, while the other portion will provide for capital improvements at the various facilities. Already, the initiative is offering small church grants for attendance at WPAUMC’s camps by children of those small congregations.
