Hurricane Dorian Relief Efforts
As this article is written, Dorian remains off the coast of the USA; its path uncertain; final damages unknown. What is known is that Dorian caused devasting long-term damage in the Bahamas. Other areas in Dorian’s path are reporting damages as well.
Even as first relief supplies were airlifted to the Bahamas by partner agencies, UMCOR was issuing a grant to the area. As is the case with UMCOR and related United Methodist relief agencies, the aid provided is long-term.
In the Bahamas, The Bahama Methodist Habitat (BMH) was out of the main path of Dorian and will provide a base for relief efforts in the days, months, and even years to come. Western Pennsylvania pastor Stephanie Gottschalk has been appointed executive director of BMH since 2018. Rev. Gottschalk's primary task in the position is preparing volunteer and recovery response with a view toward the long-term recovery. BMH will spearhead Bahama relief efforts as soon as possible.
