The prophet Elijah was listening for the voice of God. It is no great surprise that he found it in a whisper. A whisper is not something that you can run past and hear and get the full breadth of it. You must pause and stay a while. Memorial Day gives us a moment to pause. We reflect and remember those who gave their lives. We reflect and remember what they gave their lives for. In this reflection, we see ourselves and pause and wonder what we are willing to give. What things do we believe so much in that we would sacrifice it all? The thing we discover in the pause is the thing that will also have the strength to propel us through the hurry.
