That’s not what I meant
Have you ever seen the church sign that so many churches have unfortunately put out? “We love hurting people.” No doubt there were good intentions behind this sign. They were trying to let those who are hurting know they are also deeply loved. However, what they meant to say and the way they said it didn’t really see eye to eye with each other. How much comes out of our mouths and isn’t received the way we hoped it would be? How many of us, understanding the harm we just committed, are then able to apologize and try again? This humility is the mark of true Christian maturity. It is not about being right; it is about being respectful and connected in a way that shows we really do love those who are experiencing difficult times and need a gentler edge.
