Sunset Prayer for November

Weren’t we all encouraged when our 2021 Confirmation Class planted the LGBTQA+ Progress Flag in our sanctuary in October?

The rainbow-colored flag welcomes everyone who enters our sanctuary and provides assurance that we are a family that reflects the inclusive heart of Jesus. It also prompts us, as we leave the sanctuary and step again into the challenges the world presents, to continue to reflect His Heart in every opportunity.

Were there any of us who didn’t pause when we saw the name of the “discussion series’’ that launches November 9 in the Simpson Room: “I’m not a racist… am I?”

As we consider the flag, and as we consider the discussion series, as we crawl out from beneath the pandemic to welcome more people and embrace more opportunities, let’s re-visit the eloquent, inspiring prayer Pastor Hannah shared after the youth introduced the flag during the 9 am worship service on October 17.

On November 7, as the sun sets around 5:15 pm, from wherever you are, with whomever wants to join you, remember Hannah’s prayer, and see where it leads your prayer.

And, if you want to offer a prayer of thanks for the Confirmation Class (Clara, Willa, Addie, and Owyn, led by Hannah and Felicity) and the facilitators of the discussion series (Susie and Rev. Marilyn), you will not be alone. We are blessed by energy, imagination, and faith.

Hannah’s prayer

Almighty God, we thank you.

You have created each of us different and unique…
We have so many different experiences, and when we bring them together, oh, it is a beautiful thing.

When we love one another, it is a beautiful thing.

When we accept and value and lift up each other as your children, Lord, it is a beautiful thing.

And so, Lord, we pray, and we thank you that we have the opportunity at this church to really show people their worth, and that worth ultimately comes from you.

We dedicate this flag not only to this congregation, but we dedicate it to you. Use us to be your vessels, to give life to others and show them your love.

In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
