I have a very serious question for you: “Why did the math book look so sad?” If you want to know the answer, you must read to the end…

It’s that time of year again — no, not for bad joke telling — but for great fun with learning! As kids have started going back to school and most of our school districts are in full swing, the excitement of fall weather, pumpkin lattes, football season, and Christmas just around the corner is in the air. That also means there are a lot of other things in the air here at Sewickley UMC! We are excited with the opportunities to teach kids in our very own space about the love of Jesus Christ. We can’t wait to see the pumpkins begin to fill our front lawn with beauty and social opportunity. We are longing for the comforting taste of soup and hummus and the warm smiles of the lovely ladies who cook it for us. Campfires, roasting marshmallows, and falling leaves…oh my!

With the exciting things that lay before us, that also means we have lots of opportunity to do life together. You can be an active participant in all the things that make this season such a wonderful time. You can be a part of the team that educates our children about the love of Jesus. You can be a pumpkin patch volunteer who engages the community in easy conversation and reminds them of the beauty there is in the world. You can be a singing voice around the campfire and on the hayride or a loud booming voice cheering on our kids in the stands at the football game. You can be a voice that offers worship through song in our choir and hands that offer worship through the ringing of our bells. You can be the reason people in our community feel minimal impact from food insecurities and people around the world receive gifts that share with them the love of Jesus. YOU CAN BE the peace people need in their lives.

So, “Why did the math book look so sad?”

“Because it was full of problems!”

Instead of being one of the many problems in people’s lives, let’s commit ourselves to being one of the solutions by being the love of Jesus in the world. You have no excuse, only opportunity!

From one light to another,
Pastor Hannah Loughman
