Thanks to a Peace with Justice Grant, Corners Outreach in north central Georgia was able to host Corners Academy, four eight-week summer camps to keep kindergarteners through fifth-graders on track with reading, writing, and math goals. At camp, students speak and practice English daily, read aloud, and play math games. They earn lunch daily through attendance, positive behavior, and participation. As only 39% of English learners graduate from high school in that area, the non-profit works year-round to raise that number. The summer program focuses on the “summer slide”, a time when children often lose unused reading and math skills, particularly working to have children achieve 3rd grade reading skills, as those translate to higher graduation rates.

Half of the Peace with Justice offering remains in the Annual Conference, while the remainder supports ministries around the denomination, such as Corners Academy, with the purpose of advocating for peace and justice through a broad spectrum of global projects. For more impact stories, visit http://www.umcgiving.org/your-impact/P0/2748.
