The SUMC Witness Committee has created an Email address for anyone—our church family, our friends and neighbors, and beyond—to submit prayer requests. Committee members will monitor the inbox throughout the day and respond with prayer.
What started out as a crazy idea, turned into a powerful worship moment in our city. In less than 2 weeks, nearly 30 churches unified to sing a blessing over our city of Pittsburgh. This video was revealed during many of the Easter online services in churches across the city of Pittsburgh during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unprecedented circumstances suggest unprecedented prayer, so I am suggesting a mid-week sunset prayer from wherever you are, or whenever you find this note and feel moved.
The Pan Methodist Council of Western Pennsylvania is joining with several faith-based organizations and social groups to organize Western Pennsylvania’s first annual “March to Unite” on September 7th.
I was ready for the question as I stood with Laura G. at our SUMC table on the Andy Warhol Bridge on the first day of Pride weekend in Pittsburgh. I had been advised that some in the LGBTQ+ community wouldn’t want churches sharing in their celebration. Many had been hurt and frustrated and abandoned by churches.
News that Sewickley United Methodist Church had been accepted into the national Reconciling Ministries Network of LGBTQ inclusive Methodist communities drew nearly 400 “likes” and positive responses from across the country when it was posted on the RMN Facebook page in early June.
SUMC is participating in the 2019 Pittsburgh Pride Festival and Parade on June 8th and 9th. We are joining other Methodist churches in the area to host a booth at the festival both days from 12:00-5:00. We are also marching in the parade on Sunday, June 9th. Line up is at 11:30, and we are meeting between Wood St and Market Street on the Blvd of the Allies (unit #84). Contact Susie Moffett if you are interested in participating!
The Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church will take place on Saturday, February 23 through Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. Regardless of one’s position on the actions that will occur during this session, the Witness Committee is inviting and encouraging everyone to pray for all of those who are involved and the decision-making process by participating in our “My Space Prayer Vigil”.
The Special Session of the General Conference was called to receive and act on a report from the 32-member Commission on a Way Forward, which was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality, propose possible revisions, and explore options to strengthen the unity of the church.
Please join us on Sunday, October 7th, starting at 6:30 pm, as we celebrate National Coming Out Day and LGBTQ History Month. We are excited to have members from PFLAG Pittsburgh come speak about their experiences as parents, friends, family members and members of the LGBTQ Community. Child care will be provided.
