The Haunted House is back after a pandemic break, and we are ready to get scary! The theme this year is “The Backrooms of Sewickley.” Please come help with decorating on Saturday, October 8th, from noon to 3:00, and October 16th from noon to 3:00. We welcome your help as we transform the basement into a maze from an alternate reality.
The Haunted House runs Fridays and Saturdays, October 21, 22, 28, and 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. There is a wide variety of jobs so everyone can participate in some way, from decorating, babysitting, and behind-the-scenes roles, to fully made-up creepers. Any questions, please reach out to Susie Moffett.
A Haunted House at a Church?!?
For many people, it seems odd that a church would be hosting a haunted house, but this beloved event is an important part of the culture of our church, as well as the broader community. When we first offered a community haunted house, Rev. Barry Lewis, our pastor at the time, wrote a supportive essay on the Christian view of haunted houses and Halloween, stating that we aren’t celebrating these pagan customs; we recognize that they are false by making fun of them. Haunted houses are fun, because we know they are pretend.
And we do have a lot of fun! The annual Haunted House is a highlight for many members of the congregation, bringing together people of all ages from both services. We intentionally build relationships within the church while acting out silly, scary characters. We also provide the community with a fun, safe, Halloween activity while welcoming them into our space and showing love and care when needed. While we recognize this might not be everyone’s idea of fun, we encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, and see for yourself what the SUMC Haunted House is all about.
