In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.John 1:4-5
In the evening of the first Friday in December, Sewickley celebrates Light Up Night, when all of the Christmas lights are turned on in the village, and the whole community ushers in the holiday season with music, food, and fun activities hosted at various businesses and institutions.
Sewickley UMC has been participating in this tradition for decades. In recent years, we have staged a live nativity in the sanctuary while our musical groups perform. Leap of Faith usually kicks off the evening with contemporary Christmas carols. The Clocktower Ringers and the Chancel Choir are regular contributors. We’ve had Girl Scout troops sing carols, and we’ve even featured a brass ensemble. Most recently, Sophia Geason, one of our youth, has shared her talent as a ventriloquist and vocalist.
Meanwhile, out on the front lawn, we provide free hot chocolate and cookies (donations welcome) while the little ones wait in line to dial up the North Pole from Santa’s phone booth and tell that jolly soul what they want for Christmas.
Many years, our trustees have given tours of our historic clocktower. Whatever we have planned, you can be sure that our sanctuary will be warm and welcoming, and you’ll find an abundance of friendly faces and loving hearts. We hope you’ll stop by for a visit!
